I think the author of this profile definitely was somehow in the fandom, or knows more about the fandom than he's letting on. Because it's really not relevant to the rest of the piece and, for that matter, this is a really well-written, well-research, all around really good piece of writing, and the fandom stuff sticks out a bit and is unnecessary anyway, given the last 4/5 of it.
